Description

This mural of the Howe Sound was painted by the late Chili Thom. It depicted an eagle in flight, orcas and salmon, and a mountain and seaside landscape with an orange sky.

Artist Statement

This piece was created as the source image for a huge mural Chili painted with friend Stan Matwychuk in Squamish BC. The mural was created to help boost the artistic presence in the downtown core as well as promote the revitalization and continued protection of Howe Sound, North America’s southernmost fjord. The mural has been taken down but the spirit of the sound lives on in this piece.”

Chili Thom was one of Canada’s preeminent landscape painters, with over 400 original pieces hanging in collections around the globe. Until his untimely death from cancer in 2016 at age 40, Chili lived in British Columbia’s Coast Mountains and pulled artistic inspiration from his time spent exploring the mountains, forests, and coastline of his home.
