Description

Scavenger Bear” is a striking recycled metal sculpture by Joe Sauvé that brings together art, environmental awareness, and wildlife symbolism. Constructed from reclaimed and discarded materials, the piece transforms scrap metal into the form of a bear — an animal deeply connected to the Sea to Sky landscape. The sculpture reflects themes of resilience, adaptation, and the impact of human waste on the natural world, while showcasing Sauvé’s ability to breathe new life into salvaged materials through intricate metalwork and texture. Inspired by the relationship between wildlife and the environments we shape, “Scavenger Bear” serves as both a powerful public artwork and a reminder of the importance of sustainability and conservation.

Growing up on the waters of Georgian Bay in Ontario, Canada, Joe Sauvé was introduced to the welding trade through his father’s metal fabrication shop. Working alongside his father gave him access to scrap metal and off-cut materials, where he first learned welding techniques and eventually began creating artwork from reclaimed steel. His work is rooted in transforming discarded materials into one-of-a-kind sculptural pieces.

Twelve years ago, Joe moved to the West Coast to immerse himself in the wild landscapes that continue to inspire his work. Based in Pemberton, BC, he creates metal art and sculptures heavily influenced by wildlife and the natural environment. By carefully heat-treating steel, he produces a spectrum of colours and textures that interact dynamically with natural light, giving each piece a distinctive character.

In addition to sculpture, Joe collaborates with local artisans to create high-end furniture pieces that celebrate the diverse tree species of the West Coast. His work has also been featured in Whistler venues, including artwork displayed at The Raven Room cocktail bar.
