Description

This mural on plywood was created for the 2021 Mural Walk. It shows three orcas, beloved creatures who have returned to the Howe Sound, swimming in a rolling blue sea with a backdrop of silhouetted mountains against a golden sun.

Artist Statement

The evening sunlight glimmers on the rippling Howe Sound, as a pod of orcas breach peacefully. Whales have only just returned to Átl’ḵa7tsem/Howe Sound in the last few years after a century of absence when the Howe Sound was polluted so heavily by industry. Their sightings are a reminder of the successful rejuvenation of this magnificent sound, which we must continue to protect and preserve.”

Nat Tuke is an Australian artist and graphic designer living in Squamish, BC. Her art is heavily inspired by those ‘This is it’ moments – that perfect wave; the fleeting alpine glow; a setting sun glittering on a glassy ocean.

With a background in graphic design and illustration, Nat’s style features balanced compositions, bold, flat colours and clear, sharp lines. Her landscapes derive their dynamism from the strength of their flowing lines, and use of vibrant colour. Sunlight and warmth are a recurring theme in her paintings, resulting in dramatic high contrasts with a lot of subtle blends.

Moving to the Sea to Sky region in 2017, Nat’s fascination with the rugged and dramatic landscape of the west coast has translated into countless artworks.
