This mural was painted on a seacan by the late First Nations artist Gyauustees. It features four figures, one painted grey and black, one painted in red, one painted in yellow, and one painted in white, seated in a canoe with their paddles raised.
Artist Statement
This mural depicts four races of the earth all sitting in one canoe, showing we can all work together, and they are coming into shore with their paddles raised in a symbol of peace.”
Gyauustees was a traditional song keeper, Sun dancer, master carver and carrier of the World Unity, Peace, and Dignity Walking staff. He was of Nuu-chah-nulth, Coast Salish, and Kwakwakawakw ancestry.
