Description

On one side of the washroom, a green salmon and sea grass fill the lower wall, with a purple, blue and orange ocean wave scene filling the top half of the mural. A small painted panel in the lower corner contains a plaque detailing: “This piece was recovered from the Legacy Art Mural as part of the 2014 Inaugural Squamish Wind Festival, ‘The Sound We Want’, By local artist Chili Thom. This newly commissioned mural was initiated by Matthews West and completed by Stan Matwychuk”.

On the other side of the washrooms, a large sunset scene in oranges and browns features the sun setting over the ocean and a giant eagle in flight over the ocean.

On the rear of the washrooms is an orange and brown nature scene of a tree silhouette with a bird in the branches, and an ocean and mountains scene behind.

Artist Statement

The original mural was created in 2014 by Chili Thom and painted with friend Stan Matwychuk in Squamish, BC. The mural was created to help boost the artistic presence in the downtown core of Squamish as well as promote the revitalization and continued protection of Howe Sound, North America’s southernmost fjord. The mural was taken down as the building was destroyed.

The original mural was kept, discarded, thought to be lost and through some universe magic returned to Stan in 2025. The Matthews West developers of the oceanfront in Squamish were aligned with the vision of the original mural and commissioned Stan to recreate it in homage to the late Chili Thom. It is Stan’s hope that this project will share the importance of community, friendship and commitment to craft that perseveres regardless of time and space.

Stan Matwychuk is a versatile artist at Homebase Studios who has lived in the Sea to Sky Corridor for over two decades. He transitioned from Whistler to Squamish in 2010, where he has left his mark through murals, art classes, and community initiatives. Stan has spearheaded various mural projects, fostering artistic expression and community collaboration.

With a background in graphic illustration and design, Stan’s expertise extends to outdoor and indoor murals, live art facilitation, and creative consultation. He emphasizes the importance of creativity in driving innovation and community engagement, embodying this ethos through his diverse projects and collaborations.
