Description

This sculpture, made of polystyrene, is a huge male logger holding an axe, with his foot propped on a circular piece of wood with the words “Squamish Days Festival Featuring Loggers Sports”. SAM (Squamish Axe Man) was originally created by local artist Nick Tattersfield for the movie “Are We There Yet”, which was partly filmed in Britannia Beach during 2004. In 2006, SAM was donated to the Squamish Days Loggers Sports Association and a contest was held to “Name the Squamish Lumberjack”. The Squamish Axe Man – SAM for short – was given his name by long time Squamish resident Ernest Weiss.
